Security guard wounded during attempted theft of ATM in Manchester

By Kimone Witter

A security guard was wounded during the attempted robbery of an automated teller machine (ATM) in Mandeville, Manchester this morning.

According to the police, about 2 o'clock, armed men physically assaulted the guard who was on duty at Bank House Mall on Manchester Road.

The men dislodged and vandalised the machine but were unsuccessful in removing it from the premises.

Simone Spence-Johnson, President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, says the incidents of theft and vandalism of automated teller machines is disturbing and has the business community concerned.

Mrs Spence-Johnson says business operators will have to come together to devise strategies to stay ahead of the criminals.

But she suggested that the solution to the numerous incidents of vandalism and theft of ATMs is not relocation or permanent removal as this will inconvenience the public.
