Some flights from Florida to Jamaica cancelled as storm batters US state

Several flights destined for Jamaica from Florida have been cancelled as sections of the US continue to be affected by Hurricane Ian.

MBJ Airports Limited, operators of Sangster International Airport, says it has received flight cancellations up to Saturday, October 1.

Five Southwest and JetBlue flights from Orlando and Fort Lauderdale have been cancelled.

The Ministry of Tourism said the flight cancellations will negatively affect Jamaica's tourism sector.

Hurricane Ian was downgraded to a tropical storm as at 5 o'clock Thursday morning.

A National Hurricane Center advisory said Central Florida experienced massive amounts of rain.

According to the 11 a.m. advisory, Ian was moving northeast at 8 miles per hour and winds had slowed to 70 miles per hour.

It was located 25 miles north-northeast of Cape Canaveral and 285 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.
