St. James police carrying out 14-day operation in criminal hotspots

By Kimone Witter

Senior Superintendent Vernon Ellis, Commanding Officer for the St. James Police Division, says Thursday's operation in sections of the parish is the start of a 14-day clampdown in criminal hotspots.

Eleven people were detained and two guns and 40 rounds of ammunition seized.

Some of those detained were processed and released.

The joint operation was carried out in Flankers, Salt Spring, Bogue, Barnett Lane and Railway Lane.

It follows Tuesday's end of the round of States of Public Emergency declared on December 28.

SSP Ellis has praised the implementation of the security measure, which he says was a significant help to policing strategies.

He said St. James recorded a 60 per cent decline in murders in December.

Without disclosing the numbers, the senior police officer said the division closed out 2022 on a high in terms of people arrested and weapons seized.
