The Federation of Organizations of Teachers in Suriname is calling for its members to stay home on Wednesday to force the government to deal with what it claims is the runaway exchange rates for the US dollar and the Euro resulting in increased prices for goods and services.
The group of several trade unions said inflation and the volatile exchange rate are most painful for the working class, pensioners and people with disabilities, among others.
Federation president Marcellino Nerkust says the socio-economic situation has stalled and the government has no solution to bring relief to the society as a whole.
He says a major point of frustration is that goods are priced in US dollars in many retail outlets, with customers paying the equivalent in Suriname dollars at an exchange rate of between Sur$31 and Sur$34 to US$1.
