US acknowledges border bewteen Guyana and Venezuela on 123rd anniversary of tribunal award

The United States late Tuesday night reiterated that it recognises the land boundary between Guyana and Venezuela on the occasion of marking the 123-year-old 1899 Arbitral Tribunal Award.

Brian A. Nichols, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, made the announcement a day after the anniversary of the decision of the tribunal.

Mr Nichols said, "The 1899 arbitral award determined the land boundary between Guyana and Venezuela and should be respected unless or until otherwise determined by a competent legal body."

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is yet to hand down its decision in the case brought by Guyana on March 29, 2018, after decades-long dissatisfaction with little or no outcome from the United Nations Secretary General's mediation process.
