VTDI, NCTVET workers back on the job but still restive

By Kimone Witter

Classes have resumed at the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI), as employees returned to work this morning.

The employees along with their colleagues at the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) protested last week over several outstanding issues and security of tenure ahead of a transition from HEART/NSTA Trust to the Ministry of Education at the end of this month.

A meeting has been scheduled for Friday to continue the discussions started last week.

But the workers remain restive as they claim new staff was brought in today to carry out the functions of some of their colleagues who protested.

"The feedback we've gotten from our members who are at the NCTVET is that they have seen workers being brought onto the premises by the management ostensibly to replace the functions that they perform," Alexi Hull, negotiating officer at the National Workers Union, told Radio Jamaica News.

"I have not received any reports from the VTDI as yet but I will seek their clarity on that as soon as I can," he added.

Mr. Hull said a meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today and he expects the issue will be amicably resolved then.
