Police fired 38 warning shots into the air to control tense situation in Hanguranketha

Sri Lanka Police fired 38 warning shots into the air after more than 200 people tried to forcibly enter the Hanguranketha police station last night (June 26) for not arresting a group of suspects.

According to Police, shots were fired taking into consideration the damage that may be caused if they enter the police station and also for the safety of the officers on duty.

After the shooting, the group staged a protest on the Hanguranketha-Kandy main road.

A resident of the Diyathilakapura area of ​​Hanguranketha had died while undergoing treatment at the Kandy Hospital after being injured in an attack on Sunday.

Hanguranketha Police conducted investigations and arrested one suspect over the assault.

According to Police, despite being informed about the status of Police investigation into the death of the local resident, the people of the area tried to enter the Hunguranketha police station.

Police said that although investigations are underway to arrest 8 more suspects in connection with the death of the person, the group behaved in an unruly manner.

The Hanguranketha Police is conducting further investigations to identify the rioters and take legal action against them.
