Boat operator arrested in Nkhata Bay for overloading

Nkhata-Bay Police in conjunction with Likoma Police has arrested Francis Foloma, 74, after a picture of an overloaded boat identified as Makutuwima went viral on social media.

The boat operates between Nkhata Bay and Likoma.

NKhata Bay Police Public Relations Officer, Kondwani James said Foloma was arrested on September 20, 2023 for allegedly overloading the boat which is against section 150 (d) of Inland Waters Shipping Act.

Meanwhile, police in the district are advising all boat owners and operators to make sure they avoid all acts that put threats on passengers who depend on their vessels for transportation.

Foloma hails from Ulisa Village, Traditional Authority Mkumpha in Likoma District.
