Police in Lilongwe have arrested 34-year-old Yamikani Chisamba for allegedly killing his second wife, Fanny Seleman aged 22, following disagreements over farm produce.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu has told Times 360 Malawi that the incident happened in June at Chilima Village, but the suspect has been at large until his arrest today (Friday, July 28).

Chisamba, who was living with another wife at Dembo Village, is reported to have gone to Seleman’s house one day where he collected five bags of maize and one bag of soya beans in her absence, then sold them.

Police further say Seleman reported the matter to village headman Chiowa where the issue was resolved.

“However, on June 15, 2023 the suspect reported back to Fanny’s house, this time with five hired motorcycle taxi operators, and demanded to take more maize bags.

“Following Fanny’s refusal, a fight erupted, the suspect severely assaulted Fanny and later tied her up with a piece of cloth,” Chigalu has added.

The suspect then collected 10 bags of maize, five bags of groundnuts and two bags of soya beans.

He then locked his wife inside the bedroom until June 16, 2023 when the deceased’s father became suspicious of his daughter’s absence.

The father then broke into the house where he found his daughter dead, while still tied up. Postmortem revealed that death was due to internal injury following a blunt object she was hit with on the stomach.
