BUKIT MERTAJAM: A DAP Youth leader who led a protest outside a food court against former prime minister Najib Razak’s visit to Penang in March has been charged with insulting behaviour at the magistrates’ court here today.

Bukit Mertajam DAP Youth division leader Lim Zheng Han, 25, was charged with uttering insulting words to provoke a breach of the peace outside the Insadunia food court at about 2pm on March 25.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which carries a RM100 maximum fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Afifah Mohd Shokri requested bail to be set at RM1,000.

Lawyer RSN Rayer asked for the bail to be reduced to RM500, saying that Lim should not be handcuffed or kept in a cell while he posted bail.

Rayer also argued that Lim merely held up a banner quoting a “national embarrassment” statement by the appellate judges in confirming Najib’s conviction in the SRC International corruption case.

He said nothing vulgar took place, and added that a representation to drop the charge would be sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Registrar Hasliza Razak, who sat as a magistrate, allowed bail of RM500 and set July 1 for handover of documents.

Lim, who is also a citizenship assistance officer with the state government, posted bail.

He was alleged to have staged the protest with several others outside the food court before being stopped by three men attired in “Bossku” T-shirts, according to a Malaysiakini report.
