KUCHING: Sarawak International Trade and E-Commerce and Second Finance Minister Wong Soon Koh will be leaving his office after he finishes his leave in August.

Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said Wong had tendered his resignation from his ministerial posts.

“He’s currently on leave,” he said when met after launching the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) divisions here today.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Wong had paid a courtesy call on Abang Johari at his office.

The Bawang Assan assemblyman refused to disclose whether he had tendered his resignation from his Cabinet posts and when his last day in office would be.

He also said he would leave it to the chief minister to announce the person replacing him in the state Cabinet.

Earlier, on Monday, Wong, 77, who is also Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president, had announced his decision to step down from the state Cabinet.

Wong Soon Koh.

He said he has no “moral locus standi” to remain in the Cabinet and decided to leave as “a matter of political integrity”.

This came after PSB representatives were excluded from the new line-up for the state’s 24 local councils.

It was also reported that PSB’s elected representatives had been deprived of funds meant for minor rural projects and the rural transformation programme since April.

Abang Johari said he respected Wong’s decision to resign from his posts in the state Cabinet.

“That is his choice. I’m sure Wong, as an experienced politician, has his own reasons,” he said.

Wong had said earlier that he believed that none of the PSB representatives was included in the list of new councillors because the size of his party was increasing, posing a threat to the other GPS component parties.

“I don’t understand why GPS suddenly considers us its enemy.

“We have only recruited several leaders from GPS component parties who have either been sacked from their party or resigned from their positions.

“We did this with good intentions, which is to strengthen not only our party but also indirectly help GPS by preventing these leaders from joining the opposition,” Wong said
