Cyclist killed in road crash near Swakop

A man (39) was killed in a collision on the B2 road near Swakopmund on Thursday night.

The deceased, identified as Paulus Ndeshipanda, was struck by a vehicle while cycling from Swakopmund towards Nonidas smallholdings.

The accident took place around 19h30 as the driver of the vehicle, an American national, was heading from Arandis to Swakopmund.

Erongo police spokesperson sergeant Anastasia Frans says Ndeshipanda sustained serious head injuries, and “unfortunately succumbed to them on the spot”.

Ndeshipanda’s remains were transported to the Swakopmund State Hospital mortuary, and his next of kin have been informed of his death.

In another incident a woman (41) was killed in a lorry-related accident on Thursday morning.

The incident took place on a gravel road between Omatjete and Otjikaneno reserves near Ozondati Primary School in the Omaruru district.

According to Frans, the deceased, identified as Rauna Hamunyela, was travelling in a lorry with colleagues from Ohungu Lodge.

Hamunyela was allegedly sitting at the back of the lorry, near the tailgate, when the tailgate allegedly opened by itself, resulting in her falling from the moving vehicle.

“It appears the tailgate of the lorry accidentally opened while the vehicle was in motion,” Frans says.

“Ms Hamunyela, unfortunately, fell from the lorry and succumbed to her injuries instantly,” she says.

Hamunyela’s remains were transported to the nearest medical facility for further handling.

Her next of kin have been informed of the incident.
