Indian Embassy celebrates International Day of Yoga

The High Commission of India on Sunday celebrated the International Day of Yoga 2023 in Windhoek.

In a statement, the Indian High Commission said yoga experts, practitioners, enthusiasts, dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps and Windhoek residents gathered at the United Athletic Field in Olympia to commemorate the occasion.

The event aimed to spread the message and benefits of yoga for the well-being and healthy living of individuals.

As part of the celebrations, participants performed simple yoga postures, following the common yoga protocol under the guidance of experienced yoga teachers.

The event brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds who shared a common passion for yoga.

“High commissioner of India explained how the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had adopted the resolution in December 2014 with a record 177 co-sponsoring nations to observer 21 June every year as the International Day of Yoga,” the statement read.

During his address to the UNGA in September of the same year, Indian prime minister Shri Narendra Modi emphasised the intrinsic value of yoga.

“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition,” the statement read.
The statement added that yoga also embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.
