Mariental kickstarts ambitious project

The Mariental Sports Club (MSC) has begun developing its own ground after acquiring land opposite Natis Mariental and the Hardap emergency unit storage warehouse of the Hardap Regional Council.

The project, which is envisaged to be complete in 18 months, will house players’ accommodation and a high-performance centre, the Southern Stream First Division club announced yesterday.

Completion of the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of two fields, with a pavilion for about 2 000 people, and the planting of the grass, is set for around December.

The second phase will commence early next year and “includes the import of specialised equipment for the non-performance centre, plus players’ accommodation”, the club said.

“Work on the land has already started, with the area being de-bushed, cleaned and graded,” MSC executive chairperson and owner Frederick Raider Jod said yesterday.

The project, estimated to cost about N$5,5 million, is financed by MSC’s holding company JJF Investment owned by Jod.

“Our facilities will not only cater to our team, but the Brave Warriors and even the Welwitschias during preparation camps. Instead of going to Pretoria or elsewhere, we will be ready to accommodate our teams at our facilities once completed,” he continued.

“Who knows, maybe teams from neighbouring Botswana and South Africa might come for pre-season preparations here. We, therefore, urge corporates to come on board and get the naming and branding rights for our facilities.”

The club placed sixth in its first season in the recently ended Southern Stream First Division campaign, going off the boil after a strong first leg.

Established in 2020, MSC’s vision is to reach the top flight while developing players and promoting socio-economic interest to the Hardap region through sport.

An ardent football lover, Jod recently concluded an NFA Introductory coaching course held in Mariental.

He intends to enrol for an administrative football course next.
