Oshana records 497 gender-based violence cases

The Oshana region has recorded 497 cases of gender-based violence and 130 rape cases so far this year, governor Elia Irimari said in his state of the region address at Oshakati on Friday.

According to Irimari, this is an increase of 1,6% compared to the rape cases reported over the same period last year. He said the cases of gender-based violence have increased by 42,3%.

“These rape incidents involve 62 minors, which is really disheartening. We should not tolerate perpetrators of these insidious crimes in our societies,” the governor said.

He added that it is disappointing to note that societies have normalised intolerable acts and allowed lawlessness to prevail unreported, where women and children secretly endure sufferings and abuse for prolonged periods at the hands of perpetrators.

“We need to address gender-based violence as a matter of urgency,” he said.
