Tanzania beat Namibia by 18 runs

Namibia’s u19 cricket team lost by 18 runs to their Tanzanian counterparts yesterday, in their final warm-up match before the start of the u19 ICC World Cup Africa qualifier in Dar es Salaam this weekend.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Tanzania made a fine recovery to reach 204, before dismissing Namibia for 186 to complete a tense victory.

Tanzania made a solid start with Baraka Laiza and Ally Fentu putting on 78 runs for the first wicket.

Gerhard Janse van Rensburg got the breakthrough, bowling Fentu for 23, to initiate a top-order collapse that saw Tanzania crashing to 84/5.

Shaikh Bassa, however, started a lower-order revival, as Tanzania recovered to reach a competitive total.

Bassa was last man out for 72 off 84 balls (10×4), while he dominated a remarkable 56-run 10th wicket partnership with Mohamed Mbaki, with the latter only contributing one run.

Janse van Rensburg, who took 3/13 off eight overs, and Francois du Plessis (3/24 off five) were Namibia’s best bowlers.

In reply, Namibia lost Janse van Rensburg after only three balls for a duck, but Hansie de Villiers (38) and JW Visagie (40) started their comeback.

They, however, lost regulat wickets and when captain Alex Volschenk was dismissed for 39 their resistance crumbled as they were all dismissed for 186, still 18 runs short of the target.

Namibia open their campaign against Uganda on Sunday.
