US experts in Abuja train military officers on terrorism

United States experts from the College of International Security Affairs, National Defence University, Washington, have trained officers at the National Defence College, Abuja, on the need to “develop a strategic mechanism” to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency.

Our correspondent learnt that the five-day training was for the NDC’s faculty members and focused on combating terrorism and irregular threats in the country.

The college’s Spokesperson, Commander Edward Yeibo, said the training was about knowledge sharing between the faculty members on irregular threats in the contemporary security environment as well as a strategic framework on the Boko Haram insurgency.

The leader of the US experts, Ambassador Erica Ruggles, while meeting the NDC Commandant, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo, said, “Our mission is to educate and prepare senior civilian and military security professionals and future leaders of the United States and partners for the strategic challenges of the contemporary security environment.”

One of the experts, Dr Thomas Marks, said, “Protecting citizens in all spectrums in a democratic dispensation is the fundamental responsibility of governance. There is the need to understand the root causes and drivers of radicalisation which leads to violent extremism at the strategic level. This will help to develop a framework for a strategic response.”
