For the first time female inmates were allowed to come out in the city to sell their art and craft products yesterday in Port Moresby.

The freshly baked muffins, scones and bread were sold out by 8am at the stalls situated in fromt of CS Headquarters along the busy Wards Road at Hohola.

The four women were assisted by warders from the female wing who also brought out their products including shirts, dresses, meri blouses, bilums, flower pots and food.

Bomana Female Wing officer Sergeant Rose Kanama said the four women did their training at Gordon, where they took up a six-week tailoring course.

She said they can now sew different variety of clothes with materials.

She added that the baking courses were taught to them by One Tribe Ministry in 2019.

“This enables them to bake cakes, scones, bread, muffins and others.

“The money generated goes back to department.

“We are just upskilling them so when they finish and leave the knowledge they gain will

sustain themselves back in the community,” Sgt Kanama said.

So far, four with similar skills completed their term and have returned back to their community.
