Flooding Bumbu river threatens residents

The continuous rain in Lae has put Lae city residents living along the Bumbu River on high alert because of flooding river.

Since Saturday when the rains started, the residents of Admin Compound and Cassowary Street have been monitoring the river constantly.

Admin Compound resident Amos Kuri (pictured right) said Bumbu River is flowing right through the heart of Lae city and so the provincial and district authorities should look at ways to minimize potential dangers.

“Many have lost properties that cost them thousands of kina.

The river will continue to destroy houses and properties if not controlled now,” he said.

“I have lost properties in the flood previously that cost me a lot and I have moved to higher ground but yet the river keeps flooding.”

He said the river’s route maybe categorised as a disaster area but there are citizens who reside along the river.

“This Lae city, the heart of the town that the river is flowing.

Can the government fund some money and divert the flow from Kamkumung Bridge straight into the sea rather than flowing zig-zag and destroying people’s properties,” Mr Kuri said.

“Majority of the public servants are residing at Admin Compound, but if the river chases them, they will set up makeshift shelters and sleep next to the road.”
