Hela Safe House appeals for help

A safe house in the hinterlands of Wanikipa ward, Koroba Kopiago District in Hela Province is in dire need of food and clothes to look after displaced families and survivors rescued from sorcery incidents.

Wanikipa Safe House caretaker Bonny Walo said he is working with youths from the area, most of whom lost their mothers through sorcery accusation related violence, to bring a change of perspective to their community.

Mr Walo said the safe house accommodates 17 survivors –including a pregnant mother who gave birth last month and is now living there with her husband and children.

“We get our supply from Hela Rural Women’s Development Foundation of 20kg rice, two cartons of noodles, cooking oil, and soap.

“The food caters for 17 survivors and 25 youths.

“We have run out of food, the rice bag can feed us for a day or two, the rest of the time we miss out on meals.

“We also need clothes for the children, mothers and even the men,” Bonny said.

Rural Women’s Development Foundation founder Marilyn Tangua said they are assisting the safe house with food supply with the funds they received from the government.
