PNG Women’s Touchteam polishes up training

Touch Football PNG held a three day training camp last week to take stock of where their athletes’ abilities on the field are.

This was in partnership with the Australian Defence Force who brought a team across with the PM’s XIII team for the weekend match last Saturday.

PNG open women’s touch footy head coach Peter Stoddart said that going into the camp, they know they will make mistakes and hope to work on them in this week’s training sessions.

“The ladies have been training really well and the camp was our first as a squad gathered together and playing under a very elite side, so the girls have learnt a lot of new things,” Stoddart said.

He added that there is a couple of things that they as a team need to work on.

“We knew coming into this camp that we will make mistakes and things that aren’t going to work for us but it’s important that when we resume training, we will take what we learnt here and work on them during those sessions,” Stoddart added.

He said the things they have to work on are technical.

“It’s about the sweeper, sweeping the round and who they’ve gotta put the ball down and dump the ball on, some of the passing skills that we’ve gotta work on as well, but were also taught a new style of defence by the ADF Women’s team, and the team picked it up instantly.”

Stoddart said for the games they are to bring across 14 athletes to represent the code in the women’s division.

But currently have 18 on their train on squad but will cut it down after this training camp.
