Ruby hopes to represent PNG

BY PAEOPE OVASURU

Representing their country is the pinnacle of any athlete’s dream.

It does not matter on what platform they get the chance to do it, the honour of representing their people, tribe and family is the icing on the cake.

Meet 19-year-old Ruby Holman. Her mum’s family is from PNG.

“My grandmother is from Iokea village in Gulf Province and my grandfather was Australian.

My mum was born in PNG but moved permanently to Australia after high school. I was born in Australia,” she said.

“If I was given the opportunity to represent PNG, I would take it up without hesitation. I would be very proud to wear the PNG colours and do my family proud.”

Ruby started late in the sport but she has played in more teams and competitions ever since. Most recently, she played for the QPNG Gold netball club.

“I play both indoor and outdoor netball. I was fortunate enough to have been selected earlier in the year for the Queensland U19 Division 1 mixed team. But, when I saw that I’d been invited to trial for the Pepes, I was very emotional,” she said.

Netball PNG recently announced its national squad for the Pacific Games in November in Honiara, Solomon Islands of which Ruby was part of.

“The trials were really intense and although it consisted of only Brisbane-based players, it was really great to see how much talent PNG has,” she said.

Ruby plays in the position of defence and has the ability to read the game well.

“I primarily play defence so goal defence / wing defence and goal keeper are the positions I play well in. I am a strong communicator on court and also like to back my team, be positive and keep moral and focus up,” she said.

To be selected to trial for your country at 19 is a bonus for the Queensland University of Technology law student.

“I feel like I am living my dreams as an athlete. I had always hoped to be given the opportunity to trial for PNG and I feel very blessed that this has happened,” Ruby said.
