Teams vie for remaining spots

BY BENJAMIN KOITAKA

Undefeated Enga Mioks, Lae Tigers, Hela Wigmen and Rabaul Gurias are confirmed for the top four while there are two remaining spots available.

The remaining two spots are for either Mendi Muruks, Goroka Lahanis, Port Moresby Vipers or Central Dabaris.

The Digicel ExxonMobil Cup will head into do-or-die fixtures starting next week as the final round of the season proper is to be completed by Sunday.

Mioks are poised to claim the Don Fox Memorial minor premiership shield yet continue on taking their lead with 14 straight wins and a draw in 15 appearances.

While Muruks likely to finish off the season on the fifth spot, the sixth spot is for Lahanis, Vipers and Dabaris to fight for.

However, the season is over for Gulf Isou, Sepik Pride, Kimbe Cutters and Mt. Hagen Eagles.

Despite the competition in the final round of games, it would not make a lot of difference to the standings and points as teams have already secured the top spots.

Defending champion Wigmen are determined to finish somewhere near the top.

“Top four is a good finish,” club chairman Andy Hetra said.

“Was a slow start with one draw and three consecutive losses.

“The boys rebounding well in putting together an impressive 11 wins and a draw after three losses.

“Credit to the boys and coaching staff for putting the effort in.”

He said facing Muruks this Sunday in Port Moresby means a lot to them whether they finish within the top-four of making the second spot behind Mioks.

“Yes, I will be a difficult task against Muruks this week,”
Meanwhile, Muruks has a narrow chance of either making the fifth or sixth and Wigmen will determine their future in this Sunday’s main clash (3;30pm).
