Also known as Mindoro dwarf buffalo, it is a mammal belonging to the bovid family Bovidae.

The tamaraw is endemic to the island of Mindoro in the Philippines, and by far, the only endemic bovine in the country.

The species falls under the Critically Endangered category of the IUCN Red List. This was the result of habitat loss due to human habitation, as well as hunting and logging/

The tamaraw is slightly hairier, has light markings on its face, is not gregarious, and has shorter V-shaped horns compared to the bigger carabao or water buffalo.
