Red Cross Solomon Islands Turns 40

Solomon Islands Red Cross Society Celebrated its 40th Anniversary on Thursday, June 8.

The event was marked with a parade from Honiara City Council bus bay area to SMI grounds where an official program was held.

Speaking during marking of the event, the National Society President, Mr. John Sumana said, the National Society has been through a lot since it’s founding through the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society Act 1983.

“We have been led by 8 successive Secretaries General and a lot more Presidents over the years. Our past leaders to date remains those have ensured we remain committed to the mandate we’ve been given through the Act that establishes us as a National Society.

“For this reason, I on behalf of the National Society and on this important occasion, would like to express our heartfelt acknowledgement to our past Secretaries Generals.

“I would also like to take this moment to also register my sincere acknowledgement to our past National Society Presidents and Board members who for the service to the most vulnerable, give their time and effort as volunteers to make decisions that have helped in shaping the National Society to where it is now.”

“I am not going to forget the contributions of our leaders who have now left us and have passed on who also deserves to be applauded for their enormous contribution they were able to give to the National Society through thick and thin to reach this important milestone. We hope that as we celebrate today, we will also work towards extending their visons and dreams by working to fulfill our vision and mission but more so the goals we have set to achieve in our current Strategic Plan,” Mr. Sumana said.

Solomon Islands Red Cross Society was established by an act of Parliament, the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society Act 1983.

The Solomon Islands Red Cross Society is recognized by the Government as a voluntary aid society auxiliary to the public authorities in the country.

The 40 Years Anniversary celebration was marked together with current and former employees and volunteers along with teachers and students of the society’s Special Development Centre.
