Solomon Islands Beats Oceania Champions PNG

The Solomon Islands women’s national team has defeated Oceania champions Papua New Guinea 3-0 at the Pacific Women’s Four Nations in Canberra, Australia.

Jemina David scored a brace in the first half to put the Solomon Islands up 2-0 going into the break.

The second half was well contested, but the Solomon Islands piled the pressure early and scored another goal trough Ilene Pegi. The game ended 3-0.

Papua New Guinea came into this tournament as the highest ranked nation but disappointed in their opening round loss to Fiji, while Solomon Islands came into the tournament as the lowest ranked nation and impressed everyone with a strong showing in a narrow loss to Australia.

The Solomon Islands are currently one win from two games. The women’s team lost earlier to Australia’s U20 young Matilda’s 2-1.

The Pacific Four Nations tournament has been made possible through a partnership with the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade’s ‘PacificAus Sports’ program.

Australia and the Pacific share a rich history and deep love of sport and, through PacificAus Sports, Australia works with Pacific partners to unlock this potential further and create new opportunities for our athletes to train and compete together.
