Touch Rugby Coaching Session Underway at SINIS

The Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports (SINIS) is currently hosting a coaching program for touch rugby.

SINIS says the coaching course had a good turnout, with both male and female participants registered.

Participants were introduced to the foundation level of coaching, giving them the knowledge, resources, and support to develop as touch rugby coaches.

The development initiative is undertaken by the High-Performance Coach Developers Performance Service Team (PST), with support from the national federation coaches.

Participants were briefed on the concept of high-performance, and the need to focus on a holistic approach when it comes to athlete development.

Participants were reminded that a good coach is someone who helps athletes to thrive both in life and sport. A holistic approach to athlete development focuses on the following;

  • Wellbeing and lifestyle
  • Nutrition health
  • Mental skills
  • Physio/rehab
  • Strength and conditioning

SINIS says the course will involve group discussions and presentations to help participants interact and share mutual knowledge. There will also be sessions dedicated to the theoretical and technical aspects of the game.

Touch rugby was introduced to the Pacific Games in 2003 at Suva in Fiji. It is an optional sport for the Pacific Games program, and the tournaments include men's, women's and mixed competitions.

Touch rugby will be one of the many sports played during the upcoming Pacific Games 2023 in Honiara.
