Afghan forces discover assault rifles, arrest 5 in northern province

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Security forces have discovered 40 pieces of assault rifles and arrested five people during operations in parts of Afghanistan's northern Balkh province, provincial police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said Tuesday.

Addressing a press briefing here, Waziri added that the security forces had discovered the weapons from different parts of the province during a series of operations launched recently, and arrested five people in this connection.

Security forces have also taken into custody 65 people on charge of involvement in criminal activities over the past one month, the official went on to say.

The Taliban-run administration has vowed to collect arms from irresponsible armed men as part of efforts to ensure law and order across the war-torn country. So far thousands of pieces of weapons ranging from AK-47 to tank and anti-aircraft guns have been sized from different provinces.
