More than 1,000 Afghan families receive relief aid

KABUL, June 12 (Xinhua) -- About 1,090 destitute and drought-affected families received relief assistance in three Afghan provinces on Saturday, the authorities said on Sunday.

In the western Nimroz province, 501 families received food packages in Khash Rod district, according to the Afghan State Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs.

In the eastern Paktika province, 190 surveyed families received food assistance in Jani Khil and Gomal districts, the ministry wrote on social media.

Besides, the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) distributed food assistance to 400 needy families in Ahmad Abad district in the neighboring Paktia province, according to an ARCS statement.

The food packages included cooking oil, flour, beans, rice, fresh dates, sugar and other items.

Following the U.S. pullout from Afghanistan last August, Washington has imposed sanctions on the Taliban-run administration and frozen more than 9 billion U.S. dollars of assets of Afghanistan's central bank, which battered the economy in the war-torn country.
