Team Polynesia shines at 2023 Oceania Championships

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Representing Polynesia and American Samoa, Stanley Iakopo and his children — daughter, Filomenaleonisa, and sons, Mametto, and Audiescott — competed in the 2023 Oceania Cup and Oceania Masters Championships on June 22- 26 at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field oval in Saipan, CNMI.  

The Iakopo family along with discus thrower Alexander Fanene Morgan comprised Team Polynesia at the three-day event. Coach Peter Pulu is also seen in the photo.

American Samoa’s Stanley Iakopo made his presence felt at the Oceania Cup in the Athletics division, in Saipan, over the weekend. Competing in the Master’s Division, he won four gold medals in the 60 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter run, and also in long jump.

Filomenleonisa took home a bronze in the 4x100m mix medley relay in the Oceania Cup.

Fanene Morgan won gold in discus.

Team Polynesia placed second overall in the competition, while Team Melanesia won 1st place and Team Micronesia placed 3rd.

A total of 220 athletes competed at the Cup events.
