South Africa recorded more than 4000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 16 September, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 45 342 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 9.3%, down from yesterday’s 9.6% rate.

The 4215 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Thursday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 81 343. Unfortunately, 311 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 85 779.

The Institute said the current surge of COVID-19 infections seems to be showing a sustained downward trend.

There were 275 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 255 private and 409 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 9 384 patients admitted.

“The total number of cases today (n= 4 215) is lower than yesterday (n= 4 667) and lower than the average number of new cases per day over the 7 preceding days (n= 4 339),” said the NICD.

“The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has decreased.”

The majority of the cases identified on Thursday were found in the Western Cape (21%), the Eastern Cape (20%) and KwaZulu-Natal (19%).

Free State followed with 12%, while Gauteng had 10% and the Northern Cape accounted for 7%. The North West (6%), Mpumalanga (4%) and Limpopo (1%) rounded off the list.
