Traffic accident kills 2, injures 10 in Afghanistan’s Laghman

According to a provincial official, at least two people have died, and ten others were injured in a traffic accident on Friday afternoon in Laghman province, east Afghanistan.

The incident occurred on the Kabul-Nangarhar highway due to the driver’s reckless driving as the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.

According to the officials, the injured people were taken to the local hospital for medical treatment. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition, underscoring the gravity of the accident and the urgent need for medical attention.

An alarming increase in traffic accidents has occurred, attributed to reckless driving, deteriorating road conditions, congested highways, aged vehicles, and a disregard for traffic rules. This surge has resulted in over 400 fatalities within three months, highlighting a pressing need for immediate preventative measures.

Meanwhile, urgent steps must be taken to enhance road safety and reduce the number of deadly accidents. These measures should include stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road maintenance, campaigns to raise awareness about responsible driving, and investments in modernizing the vehicle fleet.

The safety of citizens should be a top priority for the authorities.
