Attempted murder case dropped

In a surprising about-turn, prosecutors on Tuesday dismissed an attempted murder case against a man after objecting to his release on bail.

As a result of the dismissal, Mario Brown, otherwise known as Buddha, was released from prison.

Brown was accused of the September 4, 2022 shooting of Richard Turnquest at a barbershop in Bain Town.

For his part, Turnquest said that Brown was not responsible for the shooting.

He made these utterances when Brown first appeared before the magistrate and in an affidavit that was used to support Brown’s bail application.

Nonetheless, Raquel Whyms objected to Brown’s release because he was already on bail for a 2019 murder when he committed the alleged offence.

Senior Justice Bernard Turner accepted her submissions and refused bail.

However, the matter was withdrawn on instructions from DPP Garvin Gaskin when Brown appeared before Magistrate Shaka Serville yesterday.

Brown is awaiting trial for the murder of Jamaal Kemp, who was gunned down at Potter’s Cay Dock.

He was supposed to be tried on the allegation in February of this year; however, the trial date was vacated.
