The body of a man believed to be in his mid-20s was found yesterday morning on Cowpen Road, police said.
This latest homicide marks the country’s 120th murder, surpassing last year’s count of 119.
Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Department Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson said police were alerted of the discovery shortly after 7 a.m. yesterday.
When officers arrived, they found that the victim’s body appeared to have been discarded on the side of the street, riddled with gunshots.
When asked if the victim is known to police, Johnson said, “We don’t have an identity of him at this time, but we’re following significant leads in the account to try to get his proper identity.”
He added, “We know that based on the condition of the body, it appears that he was here no more than about an hour prior to police coming.”
When asked what officers are doing now that this year’s murder count has exceeded last year’s, Johnson said, “I would say that the police are always concerned when these incidents occur. We continue to adjust our crime-fighting measures and we have our operation team up and about.
“Also, the operation team from the station itself is in this area and the nearing communities. So, again, we ask that you please be cautious as we approach this holiday season.”
Johnson urged the public to be aware of their surroundings and who they “hang out with”.
