Chakwera’s Tonse appetite for debts rages on: As Parliament approves MK20bn loans for Benga-Nkhotakota- Dwangwa rehab

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Parliament on Monday, August 8, 2022 approved a bill allowing government to access about MK20 billion loan to rehabilitate Benga-Nkhotakota- Dwangwa section of the M5 road.

This comes as legislators unanimously supported the bill which seeks to authorize Finance Minister on behalf of government to borrow from the OPEC Fund for International Development to finance the rehabilitation of the most dilapidated M5 road.

Sosten Gwengwe continues to borrow

Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe said the Project will help to enhance competitiveness and socio-economic integration between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania through Nacala and Ntwara Corridors.

Gwengwe added that the project will see the road being rehabilitated as it is currently standing as death trap to road users.

The Minister therefore urged general public not to panic with continued loans that the country is having arguing that roads and other infrastructure development are key to spur country’s social economic development.

President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government continues to borrow despite heavy local and international debts just two years in power.
