Of Reverend Lazarus Chakwera’s hiring retired personnel into civil service: Brigadier Charles Kalumo

By Burnett Munthali

The new appointment of retired Brigadier Kalumo as Director General Immigration has prompted me to take a look at retirement as a crucial topic today.

The average age of all veterans/ military retiree was 58 years. More specifically, 21.1 percent of the veteran population was under the age of 45, 41.2 percent were between the ages of 45 and 64, and 37.1 percent of the population was 65 years or older.

Charles Kalumo called from retirement

Immigration enforcement agents enforce the laws against illegal aliens. They investigate reports of illegal immigrants, and when they identify them, they apprehend them. If individuals are found to be in the United States illegally, for example, immigration enforcement agents assist in detaining and deporting them.

President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Brigadier General Charles Kalumo (retired) as Director General for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. Prior to this development, Kalumo served as National Chairperson for the War Veterans and Ex-service league of Malawi. I an not very sure why the President made this decision.

On March 1, 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officially assumed responsibility for immigration services and border control functions of the Federal government.

The role of Immigration Department or general functions of Immigration Department it acts as chief repository of all immigration records pertaining to entry, temporary sojourn, admission, residence and departure of all foreigners in the country.

While not always mandatory, many immigration officers hold a bachelor’s degree in the USA. Criminal justice, international studies or law, political science, and a foreign language are popular fields of study. Some roles require a master’s degree in similar areas.

You need to be at least 18 years old to work for the Immigration Department in the US. Be a United States citizen. Be actively living in the United States at least three of the last five years. Complete a physical examination.

There is confusion among staff at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services over promotion of officers in Malawi.

You can still get a job even if you are a retired soldier. You can get Social Security retirement or survivors benefits and work at the same time. However, there is a limit to how much you can earn and still receive full benefits. If you are younger than full retirement age and earn more than the yearly earnings limit, your benefits amount may be reduced.

Here are the top jobs available for ex-servicemen in India:

Facility/Human Resources Manager in the corporate sector. Security officers/supervisors.

Government jobs for ex-servicemen. Residential medical doctors. Clerical jobs. Part-time jobs. Hostel warden.

Criminal justice, international studies or law, and political science are courses done by Police officers and they are the best candidates who should take up positions at the Immigration Department.
