Police believe that a man driving a pickup truck was in an emergency before the crash, according to Wilfredman Lapazu, assistant chief of the DC Metro police.
At a press conference, Manrapaz said a truck going north on the street had a red light and hit a fireworks stand before riding a bicycle at a pedestrian crossing.
He said both cyclists and stand workers were declared dead on the scene. Truck drivers and passengers were taken to the hospital.
No one was injured in the incident, and police do not believe the crash caused the fireworks to explode, Manrapaz said.
It is unknown if anyone else was on the stand at the time of the crash.
