(CNN)Two planes crashed in the air at Watsonville Municipal Airport in California Thursday afternoon, killing 3 people died. Eduardo, mayor of Montesino.
A single-engine Cessna 152 and a twin-engine Cessna 340 collided during final descent, according to a Federal Aviation Administration statement. The FAA said there was one person on board the Cessna 152 and two on the Cessna 340.
No one was injured on the ground, he added, the FAA. A pet on one of the planes was also killed, Montecino said.
According to his Twitter post the city reported the incident before 3 p.m. It arrived.
The city of Watsonville is about an hour south of San Jose.
In a subsequent statement,city officials said they were "extremely saddened to hear of the tragic incident that claimed several lives."
"The City of Watsonville extends its deepest condolences to the friends and families of those who lost their lives," the statement said.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, he said, the FAA statement said. In a Twitter post, the NTSB confirmed that it was investigating the mid-air collision.
It is not clear what caused the two planes to collide.
