Home Explosion Kills 3, Damages 39 Homes in Indiana

(CNN)Three dead, at least 39 homes damaged after explosion in Evansville, Indiana Fire Chief Mike Connelly confirmed at a news conference Wednesday.

"There may be other victims. The search has not been completed," Connery said. "It is not yet safe to enter the building."

"A first survey of damage shows that 39 houses have suffered from severe to minor damage," he added.

Evansville is about three hours southwest of Indianapolis.

In a Twitter post, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke shared photos of the scene showing destroyed and damaged homes and piles of rubble, stating that first responders and local departments "Keep the residents in Willemette Village," he said. / The neighborhood of Wesselmann Park is safe and well informed.

A structural collapse team was called in to investigate a building deemed at risk of collapse.

Several agencies have been dispatched to the scene and authorities are asking residents to stay away from the area.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Connery added.
