Al Roker Returns to ‘TODAY’ After Surgery: ‘I’ve Got a New Knee’

Al Roker has officially made his Today Show comeback after three weeks away from the daytime talk show.

“I feel good,” he told his Third Hour co-hosts during Tuesday’s (May 30) broadcast. “This was a more involved operation because they were taking a knee out and putting a knee in … But that said, it’s coming along well.”

The meteorologist had been absent since May 9, when he first announced that he would be taking some time away from the show to recover from total knee replacement surgery.

He was in good spirits when he rejoined his Today Show colleagues during today’s episode. The segment took a morbid turn when they joked about whether Roker got to see his old knee after the surgery. He even went on to joke that he was going to sell it on eBay.

The three-week recovery period seemed to work. He shared that he was “feeling good enough” to go boating and enjoy his Memorial Day with family and friends this weekend.

Roker previously shared that this knee surgery was “the toughest one yet.”

He said, “This one is a little more complicated because it was what they call a revision. It was a replacement of a replacement, so they had to take stuff out, put new stuff in, so it was a bit of a bear.”

Though he wasn’t slated to formally return to the show until this Tuesday, Roker made an impromptu appearance last week, surprising his colleagues while they were still on-air.

But he has been calling in each week with hilarious updates about his recovery process, during which he lamented that the “toughest part” of recovering was actually having to “stay off the knee.”

Now that he’s back on the show, it looks like he’s here to stay.

The Today Show airs on weekdays at 7 a.m. ET on NBC.
