Argentina dispatches Netherlands in World Cup thriller

Argentina is semifinal bound.

Lautaro Martínez clinched an Argentinian win (2-2, 4-3 in penalties) over the Netherlands in the fifth round of penalty kicks, earning a date with Croatia.

The win inches Lionel Messi closer to a World Cup title. He aided his chase with a penalty kick goal of his own in the 73rd minute, making it a 2-0 lead for Argentina.

The Netherlands fought back, however. Wout Weghorst netted a header in the 83rd minute to pull La Oranje within one, and then knotted the score with a tricky set piece, skipping Teun Koopmeiners’ pass behind Emiliano Martinez at 93 + 11.

The game featured plenty of highlights, including a World Cup record 17 yellow cards, several stemming for a bench-clearing brawl in the 88th minute.
