Howe, a U.S. Army specialist currently deployed overseas, had the greatest surprise of his life when he recently found a small puppy .

Puppy has found a way to sneak into the base.

The small dog passed through the gate and quickly clung to the soldier, Howe told New York-based animal rescue nonprofit Paws of War.

The frightened puppy was clearly seeking refuge from the 'cruel' and 'dangerous' conditions outdoors.

"It was as if he knew me," said the soldier.

Howe named the puppy Doc and gave it food and water because it was "extremely dehydrated and very hungry."

Now Doc refuses to leave the soldiers' side.

He brought a "needed much-needed morale boost" across the faction, Paws of War shared in his statement with Fox News Digital.

"He roamed around his newfound family, wagging his tail. Instead of shaking and rubbing him on the belly a few times, he kisses him," the organization said.

The other soldiers joke with Hau, calling Doc his "shadow". Because the dog is always behind him.

"Wherever I go, he is right by my side," he said.

"I love being with him."

"Doc may be a dog abroad, but he can change the life of a dog and feels guilty that his soldiers have to leave him."

The co-founder explained that he had heard many heartbreaking stories of servicemen who had no choice but to abandon their pets.

"Now we have a chance to change that," he said. "You two deserve to be together."

In recent months, Misseri and her Paws of War team have completed more than 22 of her international missions.

This includes the reunion of two Navy sailors and their rescue dogs. A puppy was saved from almost certain death in the Middle East.
