The New York Knicks have been solidly okay to start this season. Entering play Friday, New York was 12-13 overall and in the play-in bracket, which means it is in the playoff hunt.

While unspectacular, this is better than where the Knicks have been in previous seasons where their fans were hoping for the top overall draft pick after the season. This is coming off last season where New York missed the postseason after going 37-45 and finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference.

The Knicks are not completely bereft of talent like they used to be. Jalen Brunson has been a good offseason addition to the team and has already stepped up by averaging 20.5 points per game and a team-leading 6.2 assists per game. Julius Randle leads New York in both scoring (21.6 PPG) and rebounding (8.8 RPG), while fourth-year wing RJ Barrett is scoring 18.2 points per outing.

New York won’t be competing for the Atlantic Division title with the Boston Celtics pulling away from the pack, but there is room to compete for a play-in spot with so many Eastern Conference teams hovering around .500.

Now in the third year under head coach Tom Thibodeau, it will be interesting to see how the Knicks season plays out.

Madison Square Garden Sports Corp and Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp (the holding companies of the Knicks and Rangers) have a multi-year partnership with sports betting giant BetMGM Sportsbook.

New York Knicks: The history

The Knicks have been original members of the NBA since the league began play in 1946. They enjoyed some level of success in the early NBA, advancing to the championship round from 1951-1953, but were not at the level of the early powerhouses like the Minneapolis Lakers and the Celtics.

Fortunes turned for New York in the 1970s. The Knicks captured their only two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973 with Willis Reed, Clyde Frazier, and head coach Red Holzman. Reed engineered one of the most famous moments in NBA history when he limped on the floor in game seven of the 1970 finals and helped in the winning effort. He won the finals MVP after winning the regular season MVP that season.

The Knicks weren’t as relevant in the mid-70s through the 1980s. Their biggest star in that period was Bernard King, who is often regarded as one of the most underrated players in NBA history and scored 60 points on Christmas Day in 1984.

New York’s most famous period of contention was in the 1990s with Patrick Ewing. Ewing was a fantastic player with the Knicks and had the misfortune of running into the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls in the playoffs. The Ewing Knicks did advance to the NBA Finals in 1994, but lost to the Houston Rockets. The Knicks also lost the NBA Finals in 1999 to the San Antonio Spurs.

Since then, the Knicks have gone through some really tough times. There have been lots of awful seasons and uncompetitive basketball to put it lightly. Some of the highlights of this two-decade stretch include the few weeks of “Linsanity”, the 54-win season with Carmelo Anthony in 2013, and the playoff berth in 2021.
