Texas border guardsfound three immigrants trapped inside a toolbox while inspecting vehicles at a border checkpoint on Thursday.
El Paso Border Patrol Chief Gloria Chavez said "ruthless smugglers" had trapped immigrants in metal toolboxes and transported them in "extreme summer heat." The
agent found an immigrant during a secondary inspection of theBlack Chevrolet Sylveradoon the New Mexico license plate after the K-9 agent warned behind the track.
A US citizen truck driver told agents that he had a marijuana and a handgun, CBP said. The agent asked him what was in the toolbox and he told them he didn't have the key to open it. The agent arrested the driver and broke open the padlock of the toolbox, revealing an immigrant stuffed inside with restricted oxygen.

CBP is an immigrant as a specific Honduras national, all men. They were medically evaluated and found to be healthy.
The driver was arrested and charged with a transportation plot. It was not clear what happened to the immigrants after they were discovered.
"It is a cross-border criminal organization's way to endanger lives using dangerous and sneaky smuggling tactics," Chavez said in a statement. "Often, smuggled immigrants are trapped in a confined space with limited oxygen."
