‘Breaking Bad’ Star Bryan Cranston Plans to “Pause” His Career By 2026, Says He’ll Shut Down Mezcal and Production Companies

After decades in the limelight, Breaking Bad and Asteroid City star Bryan Cranston is looking to temporarily retire in the next few years — so what will he do instead? Well, the actor laid it all out in a new interview with British QQ for their June cover story.

According to Cranston, he plans to shut down his production company Moonshot Entertainment and sell his half of his mezcal company Dos Hombres — which he created with his Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul — by 2026.

Cranston is also planning on moving to a foreign country, likely France, for at least six months with his wife Robin Dearden — whom he married in 1989.

“I want to change the paradigm once again,” he told GQ. “For the last 24 years, Robin has led her life holding onto my tail. She’s been the plus one, she’s been the wife of a celebrity. She’s had to pivot and adjust her life based on mine. She has tremendous benefit from it, but we’re uneven. I want to level that out. She deserves it.”

As for what they’ll do in France? Cranston, who will be 70 by that point, said they’ll live in a small village and enjoy the simplicities of life — like learning how to cook and grow a garden.

“I want to have that experience,” he said. “I want to go for day trips and have the fire in the fireplace and drink wine with new friends and not read scripts.”

He continued, “It’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, I’ll read and see what I’m going to do.’ No, it’s a pause. It’s a stop. I won’t be thinking about [work]. I’m not going to be taking phone calls.”

When it comes to taking a step back from his storied career, Cranston — who had his breakout role in the hit 1990s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle added, “It’s about taking a chance. I’m used to that feeling — of not knowing.”

But fear not! There’s still some fun to be had before we officially say au revoir to Cranston.

The actor is starring in Wes Anderson‘s science fiction rom-com Asteroid City — which will be released in theaters on June 16. Plus, he will appear in upcoming movies like the spy action thriller Argylle and the drama Everything’s Going to be Great, which is currently filming.
