Brian Marchment, longtime NHL defense, dies at age 53

Former NHL defense Brian Marchment died suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 53, his agent said. 

A 17-year veteran, Marchment, was in Montreal at the time of his death. There he attended the next 2022 NHL Draft as a San Jose Sharks scout. He has been a member of the shark organization in various roles since 2007. 

The cause of death was not immediately known as of Wednesday afternoon.

Marchment, 53, had been with the Sharks in some capacity since the 2007-08 season.

Marchment has a long career in the league Winnipeg Jets, Nine different teams including Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whales, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Sharks. He was traded to Avalanche in 2003 after being traded to sharks in 1998.

Physical defense scored 40 goals and 182 points during his career. 

The 27-year-old Mason Marchment, the son of Marchment, is a Florida Panthers forward.
