David Peterson wins final spot in Mets rotation over Tylor Megill

David Peterson has earned a rotation spot for the Mets with his standout spring, The Post has learned.

Peterson, 27, gives the Mets a lone lefty in a superb rotation but he won the job on merit.

Peterson was in competition with Tylor Megill for the fifth spot and will begin the year in the Mets’ vaunted group, which includes future Hall of Famers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander plus Japanese signee Kodai Senga and veteran Carlos Carrasco.

Peterson earned the assignment by posting a 0.75 ERA this spring, following up on a solid 2022 regular season in which he went 7-5 with a 3.83 ERA with nine starts among his 28 appearances.

Megill was the surprise Opening Day starter last year due to injuries and showed great ability before going out with an injury himself.

The plan is to keep Megill stretched out so he will be in position to start as well.

Megill is highly regarded by Mets people but he was a bit wild in his final two spring starts.

Megill had a 3.71 ERA this spring.

Manager Buck Showalter remarked the other day that they should feel fortunate only one starter went down in spring.

Jose Quintana, another free agent pickup, is expected to be out until July with a fractured rib.

Once Quintana returns, the Mets will have enviable rotation depth.
