Democratic Republic of Congo Authorities Search Hundreds of Prisoners After Massive Jailbreak

Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo search for hundreds of prisoners who escaped Tuesday night from Kakwangle Central Prison when gunmen attacked the facility doing. Five of him, including two police officers, died during a jail break in Butembo city.

Reuters reported that he had only 58 of the 874 inmates left in prison when the attack ended.

Butembo's police chief, Colonel Polo Ngoma, said on Thursday that police had re-arrested about 50 of the escaped prisoners.

Ngoma told his VOA that some of those captured are hiding with their families, while others are inside friends' homes.

He said officers were looking for hundreds of other prisoners on the run.

Authorities say the fugitives are dangerous criminals. Most of the Central Prison inmates were imprisoned for murder and aiding terrorist groups.

Anthony Muwarshai, spokesman for the Democratic Republic of Congo Army's operation against armed groups, said the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group was responsible for the escape.

In 2020, the ADF was linked to a jail break that freed more than 1,000 of his inmates in Beni, northeast Congo.
