Drew Barrymore Says Ashley Graham Got “the Real” Hugh Grant During Her Awkward Red Carpet Interview

Hugh Grant might have called out Drew Barrymore‘s “horrendous” singing voice in their 2007 flick Music and Lyrics, but that didn’t stop the actress from continuing to love her former costar. During today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore — who playfully serenaded Grant in a clip posted to her social media last week — even went as far as to defend his awkward red carpet interview with Ashley Graham during the 2023 Oscars.

In response to him saying he’s heard “dogs bark better than she sings,” Barrymore let out a belly laugh before telling the audience, “If you know Hugh, that is his way of loving you.”

She added, “It’s funny, too, because there’s this thing going around with him and Ashley Graham on the red carpet. And people are like, ‘He’s such a curmudgeon. And she’s so thrown.’ I’m like, ‘No, that is Hugh Grant.'”

The 50 First Dates actress revealed that you think you’re getting this “charming movie star and what you really get is grumpy Hugh and then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh.” She noted that his swipes at her singing voice are merely him being “absolutely funny” and that he “doesn’t mean one negative thing about it,” before pointing out that Graham got “the real Hugh” on the red carpet that night.

Meanwhile, Ross Mathews inquired, “And you guys hit it off? Because you’re like a happy puppy and he’s like slamming into a wall. But somehow it worked between you two?”

Barrymore then admitted that it took her “a second” to warm up to Grant’s personality when they worked on their rom-com — similar to Graham.

“I was like, ‘Oh no, I love you. I want to love you. You’re not letting me love you.’ And then as I got to know him, I was like, ‘I do love you. I love you for the real you,'” she recalled. “He is a hilarious, good human being.”
