'Friends' star Lisa Kudrow: There was no 'business' in writing about people of color

Lisa Kudrow is honest about why the writers of "Friends" struggled with various characters.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, the 59-year-old actress said the show's creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman , were ``in what role? It's a story of people of color with their own backgrounds.

"Well, I feel like it was a show made by the two of hers who went to Brandeis and wrote about life after college," she reasoned Kudrow.

"Especially for the show, if it's going to be a character-driven comedy, I write what I know. They don't have a job to write a story about the experience of being a person of color."

"I think the big question I was seeing at the time was, 'Where's the apprenticeship?'" she added.

In this show, which ran from 1994 to her 2004 network, her six lead "friends" were all white, with mostly people of color appearing in minor supporting roles. .

Earlier this year, Kaufman told the Los Angeles Times that she was very "embarrassed" and "guilty" about the hit show's lack of diversity.said he donated $4 millionto his alma mater. When Kudrow made headlines last week, she said, "Friends."

``I saw myself on the show, and I wore clothes.'' I saw them wearing them, I looked at Kourtney and Jennifer and I thought, 'Oh, they know tailoring, so we can talk to the costume designer about where to incorporate it,'" she said.

In July, she told Seth Meyers that her 24-year-old son, Julian Murray Stern, had made "insulting" comments about the series.

"He said, 'It's actually really funny. I mean guys are very funny.' 'No, I mean, you're 'that's funny too,'' Kudrow recalled with a laugh. "And never in my life have I wanted to say 'F-k you!' to my child.
